How long does cooked rice last
Cooked rice is 1 day in the fridge on the UK FSA fact checker. Cool it within about an hour. Reheat once, until it is steaming hot. Dry rice is a different shelf.
Quick answer
The charts do not all agree. The large figure is the shorter published window.

Months in the freezer column are about quality. USDA says food held continuously at −18°C (0°F) stays safe; the ministry also notes that freezing does not kill bacteria.
Best way to store it
Rice is not a food whose spores die in the pot. The UK FSA says Bacillus cereus spores can survive cooking and can make a toxin if the rice sits warm. Do not leave it to cool in the pan, the rice cooker, or the steamer. Spread it in a shallow box, get it to 4°C (40°F) within about an hour, and eat it within 1 day. If you reheat, reheat once, until the dish is steaming hot all the way through. FoodKeeper prints two lines for the same food: a side dish such as vegetables, rice, or potatoes is 3–4 days, and a separate cooked-rice line is 4–6 days. The large figure is the shorter one, the FSA’s day.
Dry white rice, unopened, is 2 years in the cupboard. After opening, the cupboard window is 1 year, or 6 months if you move it to the fridge. Brown rice carries more oil. Its cupboard line, opened or not, is 1 year, and the fridge line is 6 months. The ministry says keep grains somewhere cool, dry, and dark. If you see mould or insects, do not wait for the date.
Get perishable food into the fridge within 2 hours of cooking it or bringing it home, and within 1 hour if the kitchen is above 32°C (90°F). USDA FSIS and Turkey’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry both publish that cutoff. A closed deep pot stays warm; a shallow box cools.
A chart is a window, not a verdict on the container in your hand. A sour smell, a slimy surface, or mould means it is finished, even on day one. This page is not medical advice.
Signs it has spoiled
- A sour, sweet, or stale smell from cooked rice.
- Grains covered in a sticky film, or mould in the box.
- Rice that stayed warm for more than about an hour. The FSA says not to eat it even if it smells fine.
- Live insects, webbing, or damp clumps in dry rice.
Cold rice that has gone firm is not, by itself, spoilage. Firmness does not replace the clock.
Freezing and thawing
The FSA does not forbid freezing rice, and it does not give a month-count. Cool it fast, freeze it within about an hour, in portions. FoodKeeper’s side-dish line puts the freezer at 1–2 months. Its separate cooked-rice line is 6 months. The ministry’s leftover-dish list is 2–4 months. The large figure is the shorter one, the side-dish line. Thaw in the fridge, then reheat once, straight away, until it is steaming hot.
Freezing dry rice is not what these charts are about. A tight jar is enough.
Thaw in the refrigerator, not on the counter. Do not refreeze a portion that has thawed. The ministry states the same rule: thaw frozen food in the fridge and take out only what you will eat.
Myths and facts
- You must never reheat rice. The FSA says you can reheat it once. The problem is not the reheating. It is the warm wait beforehand. Do not reheat a second time.
- Four to six days is safe because it is an American number. FoodKeeper prints 4–6 days. The rice-specific UK rule is 1 day. This page leads with the shorter one.
- Leaving rice in the cooker is keeping it hot. If it is not closed and truly very hot, it is sitting warm. The FSA says not to cool rice in the cooker.
When someone is at higher risk
The windows assume a generally healthy household. Pregnancy, young children, older age, or a weakened immune system are reasons to keep the shorter figure, to skip raw or undercooked food, and to reheat leftovers until the centre is steaming. USDA’s figure for reheating leftovers is 74°C (165°F).
For pregnancy, young children, older age, or a weakened immune system, keep leftover rice even tighter: cool it within the hour, finish it within 1 day, and throw it out if you are unsure. Reheating does not always destroy the toxin. The ministry also says to use leftover dishes within two days. For rice, the FSA’s one day is shorter, and it wins.
Questions people ask
How long does cooked rice last in the fridge?
The UK FSA says 1 day. Cool it within about an hour. FoodKeeper lists 3–4 days for a side dish and 4–6 days for its cooked-rice line. The large figure is one day.
Can you reheat rice?
Once. It has to be steaming hot all the way through. No second reheating. If it sat warm beforehand, reheating does not erase the toxin.
Can you freeze cooked rice?
Yes, cooled fast and portioned. The shorter quality window is 1–2 months. The ministry’s leftover line is 2–4 months, and FoodKeeper’s rice line is 6 months.
How long does dry rice last?
Unopened white rice is 2 years in the cupboard. Opened, it is 1 year, or 6 months in the fridge. Brown rice is 1 year.
Is takeaway rice the same as home rice?
The FSA asks for extra care with takeaway rice: some shops cook it ahead and reheat it. Eat it soon after it arrives, or cool it within an hour and follow the 1 day rule. Do not be the second reheat.
