How long do strawberries last

FoodKeeper prints strawberries at 2–3 days in the fridge. The bold number is two days. The pantry is Not recommended. This page does not write a counter day. In the freezer the ministry caps fruit at 6 months. FoodKeeper’s freezing note is 8–12 months. That note is for strawberries prepared for freezing. The ministry line is not named strawberry. It is a fruit ceiling. The bold number is the shorter one. Apples have their own page. Bananas have their own page.

Quick answer

The charts do not all agree. The bold number is the safe (shorter) end of the range in the official sources.

Months in the freezer column are about quality. USDA says food held continuously at −18°C (0°F) stays safe; the ministry also notes that freezing does not kill bacteria.

Best way to store it

Keep strawberries unwashed, in their own punnet or a box that can breathe, in the fridge. FoodKeeper prints this row as 2–3 days. The bold number is two days. A closed, wet bag speeds mould. The moment you see a mouldy berry, take it out. Mould moves to the neighbour. Wash just before you eat. Hull them then, too. The pantry is Not recommended. This page does not write a counter day.

No separate day is printed for a hulled or cut berry. FoodKeeper’s row is the whole strawberry. A sooner date on the pack wins. Date types are on the use-by and best-before guide. The map of the fridge is in the fridge article. Do not shut them in the same closed box as a ripe banana. That is not a time.

Get perishable food into the fridge within 2 hours of cooking it or bringing it home, and within 1 hour if the kitchen is above 32°C (90°F). USDA FSIS and Turkey’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry both publish that cutoff. A closed deep pot stays warm; a shallow box cools.

A chart is a window, not a verdict on the container in your hand. A sour smell, a slimy surface, or mould means it is finished, even on day one. This page is not medical advice.

Signs it has spoiled

  • Mould, often white and fuzzy. Mould on one berry finishes the box. Eating around it is not enough.
  • A soft, wet, collapsing berry. A wet spot moves to the neighbour.
  • A fermented or vinegar smell. The strawberry’s own smell is not that.
  • Water pooled in the bottom of the punnet. Water that waits grows mould.

A berry with a slightly pale tip, if it is still firm and the smell is ordinary, is not finished on its own. Softness and mould decide.

Freezing and thawing

Hull them, dry them, freeze them in a thin layer, then bag them. You do not want air left in. The ministry caps fruit at 6 months. FoodKeeper’s freezing note is 8–12 months. The note is for strawberries prepared for freezing. The ministry line is not named strawberry. The bold number is the shorter one, 6 months. The months are about quality. USDA says food held continuously at −18°C (0°F) stays safe.

Thaw in the fridge. Do not refreeze what has thawed. Frozen strawberries are for a smoothie or for cooking. The texture of a fresh berry does not come back. A berry washed and put away wet is not what this row recommends. Dry it, then freeze it.

Thaw in the refrigerator, not on the counter. Do not refreeze a portion that has thawed. The ministry states the same rule: thaw frozen food in the fridge and take out only what you will eat.

Myths and facts

  • Strawberries last for days on the counter. The pantry is Not recommended. This page does not write a counter day.
  • Washing them first makes them last. Wash just before you eat. Water speeds mould on a berry that is waiting.
  • Eight to twelve months in the freezer is a use-by date. That is FoodKeeper’s longer note, 8–12 months. The bold number is the ministry fruit ceiling, 6 months. The line is not named strawberry. The months are about quality.

When someone is at higher risk

The windows assume a generally healthy household. Pregnancy, young children, older age, or a weakened immune system are reasons to keep the shorter figure, to skip raw or undercooked food, and to reheat leftovers until the centre is steaming. USDA’s figure for reheating leftovers is 74°C (165°F).

Heating a mouldy strawberry does not undo mould. One mouldy berry in the box may already have gone past what you can see. In pregnancy, for young children, in older age, or with a weakened immune system, do not sort a mouldy berry by tasting it. A strawberry is not raw meat. Eating around the mould still does not rescue that box.
